Namibian Embassy in Stockholm

Ambasciata di Namibia a Stockholm, Svezia

Panoramica

Luntmakargatan runs through Vasastan, the dense central-Stockholm grid of residential blocks and embassies just north of the City Library; number 88 is the Namibian chancery — the resident mission for Sweden and concurrently accredited to Norway, Denmark and Iceland, the only Namibian embassy in the Nordic region. Stockholm hosts the bilateral file with Sweden, which is one of Namibia's oldest and most substantive: Sweden recognised SWAPO as the legitimate representative of the Namibian people before independence, provided significant solidarity support through the independence movement, and Sida has run continuous bilateral development cooperation since 1990. Honorary Consul-General Klaus Endresen is based in Windhoek for the Nordic cluster from the other end, and the embassy maintains Honorary Consuls in Oslo (Kjersti Lie Holtar), Rogaland (Terje Wester) and Copenhagen (Lisbeth Møller) for light consular relay within the four-country area.

Servizi Visto

Swedish, Norwegian, Danish and Icelandic passport holders travelling to Namibia for tourism use the Visa on Arrival route at Hosea Kutako International Airport or apply online through the Namibian Ministry of Home Affairs and Immigration e-Services portal — there is no consular processing at Stockholm for tourist visits up to ninety days under the bilateral exemption agreements. The embassy handles the categories that require pre-arrival approval — business and conference visas, work permits, study permits, research and journalism permits, long-stay visitor permits, and any travel by non-Nordic residents in Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Iceland whose passport is not on the Visa on Arrival list. The standard pathway is electronic via the e-Services portal with the Stockholm embassy as the Nordic regional reference for paper queries; the embassy can also receive paper applications at the counter where electronic filing is impractical. Diplomatic and Official Passport holders from the four accredited Nordic states are typically exempt from short-stay visa requirements under the relevant bilateral protocols.

Servizi Consolari

The Consular Section assists Namibian citizens resident across the Nordic accreditation area with passport applications and renewals, emergency travel documents, civil registration (births, marriages, deaths), registration of citizenship by descent, identity-document replacement, and legalisation and apostille of Namibian-issued documents. The honorary consulates in Oslo, Rogaland and Copenhagen provide first contact, certified-copy work and document relay to Stockholm; passports, identity documents and civil-status registration are issued by the Stockholm chancery itself. The community is small but persistent — Namibian researchers at Lund, Uppsala, Stockholm and the Linnaeus University Kalmar campus; Sida-funded Namibian masters and PhD students; the long-running Centre for Sustainable Agro-Forestry-Pastoral and Marine Systems exchange with the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences; and the diaspora generation that came of age through Sida-funded scholarship pipelines.

Supporto Commerciale ed Esportazione

Bilateral commercial work is anchored by the Sida legacy and by Nordic interest in Namibia's green-energy and critical-minerals story. Swedish industrial machinery (Sandvik in mining equipment, Atlas Copco in compressed-air and mining, ABB in grid and process automation, Volvo Trucks and Volvo Construction Equipment in heavy haul) is well-established in the Namibian uranium, copper and aggregates sectors. Norwegian and Danish marine and offshore-services firms have ties to the Walvis Bay port and the Orange Basin oil-and-gas opportunity. Namibian exports to the Nordic region cluster around uranium feeding the Swedish Forsmark, Ringhals and Oskarshamn nuclear-electricity fleet and the Finnish Olkiluoto cluster (shipped via European utilities and traders), processed marine products from Walvis Bay into the Nordic seafood-processing chain, table grapes and processed fruit, and small but growing volumes of green-hydrogen-derived ammonia under the Hyphen-project offtake arrangements. The embassy's economic section coordinates with Business Sweden, the Confederation of Swedish Enterprise (Svenskt Näringsliv) Africa Committee, Innovation Norway, the Danish Export Association and the Iceland Chamber of Commerce.

Opportunità di Investimento

Investment promotion is anchored by Namibia's flagship green-hydrogen file — the Hyphen project at Lüderitz has attracted significant Nordic equity, offtake and trading interest (Yara has signed offtake intent on green ammonia; Swedish pension funds and Norwegian sovereign-wealth indirect investment patterns have engaged the early development capital). Critical-minerals investment opportunities span rare earths, lithium, copper and high-purity manganese in the Karibib district and the Tsumeb-Otavi belt — Swedish mining-finance houses and Nordic critical-minerals offtake interest meet a natural fit. Tourism real estate (the Swedish hotel groups and Nordic eco-tourism operators have explored the coastal Erongo cluster), Atlantic fisheries cooperation, and the SADC-anchored renewable-energy buildout round out the active investment files. The Namibia Investment Promotion and Development Board (NIPDB) maintains regular Nordic-region briefings hosted at the Stockholm chancery.

Programmi Culturali ed Educativi

Cultural and education work in the Nordic region is anchored by the substantial academic exchange that grew out of Sida cooperation — Namibian researchers at Stockholm University, Karolinska Institutet in public health, Uppsala University in tropical agriculture, the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) in animal-and-rangeland science, Lund University in development studies, and the Linnaeus University Kalmar campus in marine biology. Namibian artists and writers feature regularly in Nordic African-arts festivals (the Africa Festival Hultsfred, the Bergen International Festival African programme, the Copenhagen Jazz Festival African strand). The Namibian Independence Day reception on 21 March is held at the Stockholm chancery, with smaller commemorations at the three Nordic honorary consulates.

Area di Servizio

Consular and diplomatic jurisdiction: the Kingdom of Sweden (host), the Kingdom of Norway, the Kingdom of Denmark (including the Faroe Islands and Greenland for civil-status purposes), and the Republic of Iceland. Finland is covered by the Namibian Embassy in Berlin rather than from Stockholm. The four Nordic honorary consulates — Oslo, Rogaland (Stavanger area), Copenhagen and Windhoek (the Honorary Consul-General Klaus Endresen at the other end of the bilateral relationship) — extend the chancery's reach.

Informazioni sugli Appuntamenti

Visa and consular counter service is offered Monday to Friday, 09:00–13:00 and 14:00–16:30, without prior appointment for routine document handover and visa intake. Complex consular cases and Ambassador-level meetings are booked by phone to +46 8 442 98 00. The Holiday Visa and e-Visa routes are end-to-end electronic via the Namibian e-Services portal and do not require a Stockholm visit.

Note Speciali

Luntmakargatan is in Vasastan, the central Stockholm district immediately north of Norrmalm; the chancery is reached by Metro to Rådmansgatan or Odenplan on the Green Line and a short walk, or by tram and bus along Odengatan. The chancery is about ten minutes by car from Stockholm Central Station and twenty-five from Stockholm Arlanda Airport (ARN). Direct flights between Stockholm Arlanda (ARN) and Windhoek (WDH) do not exist — the standard routings are via Frankfurt on Lufthansa, via Doha on Qatar Airways, via Addis Ababa on Ethiopian Airlines, or via Johannesburg on SAS-Airlink and South African Airways. A yellow-fever vaccination certificate is required if arriving via an African country with documented yellow-fever transmission, including all main African transit hubs.
