Sofia has been continuously inhabited for over 7,000 years and contains an unusually dense concentration of historical layers within a walkable city centre. The Roman Serdica ruins are preserved in the Serdika Metro Station; the 4th-century Rotunda of St George — one of the oldest buildings in Bulgaria — stands in a government courtyard; the Banya Bashi Mosque (1576) is still in active use near the covered market. The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral (completed 1912, one of the largest Orthodox cathedrals in the world) dominates the city skyline and adjacent to it is an atmospheric outdoor icon and antique market. The National Archaeological Museum holds the Thracian silver Rogozen Treasure; the Boyana Church (UNESCO) on the Vitosha slopes preserves 13th-century frescoes of exceptional quality.

  • •Sofia Airport is 10 km east of the centre. Metro Line 1 connects the airport to the city in about 30 minutes (1.60 BGN single ticket). Taxis also available — always use metered companies (OK Supertrans, Yellow Taxi) or Uber/Bolt.
  • •City transport: Sofia has a metro, trams, trolleybuses, and buses. Single tickets are 1.60 BGN (approx. €0.80); day passes and multi-journey cards are available. The city centre is very walkable.
  • •Currency: Bulgarian Lev (BGN). Not Euros. ATMs everywhere in the centre. Most restaurants and shops accept cards, but small mehana taverns and market stalls are often cash-only.
  • •Boyana Church requires advance booking — visitor numbers are strictly limited to protect the fragile frescoes. Book online through the National Historical Museum website.
  • •Mount Vitosha: dress in layers and bring waterproofs even in summer — the summit can be significantly colder and windier than the city. The mountain can be reached by metro to Vitosha station then cable car, or by taxi to the Zlatni Mostove starting point.
  • •Sofia is quieter on Sundays; some smaller restaurants and shops are closed. The icon and antique market at Alexander Nevsky Square operates daily but is busiest on Sunday mornings.
